Welcome to Jay's Music
I love all kinds of music. Some of my favourites include:
- Peter
Gabriel
I've been a fan of the original frontman from Genesis since the late '70s.
Peter's musical career spans nearly thirty years, and nothing
he's done disappoints me. I can't think of another artist for whom I can
say that.
There are all kinds of Peter Gabriel pages out there, but I think
In Your Eyes
is as good a place as any to start.
- The
Rheostatics
My first exposure to the Rheos was in December '94, when
RealTime on CBC Stereo re-broadcast a live show. Since then I
have seen the band in concert about ten times, and I've been blown away
each time. The Rheos' originality and sense of fun are unmatched.
All manner of Rheostatics discussion can be found on the
Fish
Mailin' list.
-
Perhaps the biggest band in Canada right now. I first heard them in late
'87 or early '88 when Last American Exit was getting some airplay
on CFNY. I was hooked then, and I've been a huge fan ever since.
Some of the better resources for Hip fans include:
- Blue Rodeo
- Morphine
Most of the music that I love has been referred to me by other people,
and Morphine is a classic example of that. I would never have heard
about this fantastic Boston-based band had a friend from Minneapolis, MN
not included a couple of their songs on a compilation tape he sent me.
- Jack Logan
Another artist I first heard on Fruitbat's tape. (Fruitbat, the guy from
Minneapolis.)
- The Inbreds
Another referral, this one by someone I didn't know. I read a post in
alt.music.canada about this bass &
drums duo from Kingston, ON who had just released a new album. A couple
of months later the opportunity to see them live came up, so I checked
them out. I've been hooked ever since.
Pay a visit to Kombinet, The
Inbreds homepage, by web-meister Johnny O'Brien. (The aforementioned
person who referred me to the band.)
I run an Inbreds mailing list called Dale Says. Send a message
to [email protected] if you want
to sign up.
- Strawman
Although it's not generally my thing, once in a while I need a good shot
of adrenaline via something really loud.
Strawman is a
Toronto band that I found out about in early '96, and I have to say that
they are perhaps the most interesting hard rock band I've heard. And
since my name is on their web site, I figure I should return the favour.
- Jazz
I started listening to jazz in 1992 after a brief visit to the
world-famous Festival du Jazz International de Montreal. Once again, I
owe my interest to a friend's recommendation.
There's a list of Jazz
Resources on the Internet available at Northwestern University.
- Oscar Peterson
One of the greatest jazz pianists of all time. I had the pleasure to see
Oscar Peterson in concert last summer at the Montreal Jazz Festival, the
single best concert experience of my life. Looking for Internet
resources on OP.
- Béla Fleck and the
Flecktones
This is one of the funkiest bands I've ever seen in concert. Oscar
Peterson may have provided my best concert experience, but the two
Flecktones shows I've seen are right up there as well.
- I also listen to a lot of classical music, including the composers
Rachmaninoff, Tchaikovsky, Beethoven, and Rimsky-Korsakov, and musicians
Nigel Kennedy, Yo Yo Ma and Cecilia Bartoli.
